Process Development

High-volume industrial manufacturing of thin films demands not only a high-performance coating system, but a robust deposition process as well. The two go hand in hand, for obvious reasons—after all, what good is a system without the process? With VPT, you get the best of both. Our process team has the coating system experience together with materials and technology expertise. Our state-of-the-art process lab is fully equipped with the coating systems, test modules, deposition tools and monitoring technologies necessary to develop, test and perfect the innovations our customers demand.

The requirements for thin films are ever-changing, and becoming more challenging all the time. VPT works closely with our customers to understand their specific needs and devise unique solutions—the right solutions—in record time. And because we can do it all on site, our customers get the benefit of unusually fast turnaround, even for the thorniest problems.

For example, we have a customer who makes solar concentrator cells. Existing wet chemical processes couldn’t provide the performance they needed for their high-reflectance mirrors. There were environmental concerns, too. VPT was able to devise the ideal thin-film process that meets both their performance and environmental specifications, and is suitable for industrial-scale production.

Another issue facing solar cell manufacturers is the need to reduce manufacturing cost to achieve grid parity. VPT engineers developed a new process to evaporate metals at temperatures of 1300° C, delivering extremely high deposition rates and excellent layer properties.
